Though the portrait of a male lion may be one of the most often used images to represent strength in African wildlife, this image shows a more gentle and softer side to male lions. This male lion was photographed in a private game reserve in the Eastern Cape, after he had chased a competitor away. The scars on his face show just how hard he has worked to get to his dominant position and may be why he looks so smug.
