The Hyacinth Macaw is the largest flying parrot species and is native to South America. Due to their dwindling numbers, there are numerous projects to breed these birds to increase their numbers. One such captive breeding centre in the Eastern Cape is home to just 2 pairs of Hyacinths but plays just as crucial a role in increasing species numbers. This photo shows a tender moment between a male and female as they settled into their new flight.

The superb colours really show just how special this bird is.
